Our family typically takes vacation during mid-July with my wife and I taking the first few days of the week to celebrate our anniversary, followed by a family trip during the second half of the week. This year (2023), my wife and I decided to stay in a cabin in the Seneca Rocks area and do some “adventure” stuff during our half of the week.
After a bit of searching for a cabin to rent, we settled on Harman's Luxury Log Cabins in Cabins, WV for our adventure getaway. The location was close to NRocks Outdoor Adventures (28 minutes), which was our primary reason for visiting the area. Additionally, it was close to Seneca Rocks (13 minutes) and close enough to Blackwater Falls (50 minutes) and Dolly Sods (45 minutes) that we could make a day trip out of each. Most importantly, it was in a good location to “get away” and offered the amenities we were looking for - a hot tub, kitchen, hiking trails, and fishing (which we didn't do).
It's sometimes hard to find a spot that is out of range of cell service - we weren't necessarily looking for it, but we found it! There was no cell service in the valley where the cabins are located but, for those who shudder at the thought of being without their cell phone, Harman's includes WIFI in their cabins. (I should note that while we were there, the internet was down intermittently which wasn't a big deal for us but could be for others.)
Cabins, WV, and the location of the cabins specifically, feels remote but is only 10 miles from Petersburg, WV, a city of around 2500 where you can find restaurants and grocery stores. We ate at a restaurant called Cheetah B's, which is about 8 miles north of the resort. It seemed like a pretty popular place, we had to wait a few minutes to get a table but, the food was good and it had a friendly, casual atmosphere. If you're looking for somewhere to have a nice dinner in the area, it's worth a visit. We also ate at Pizza Hut in Petersburg, WV for lunch but that was more of a bit of nostalgia than anything else. Otherwise, we took groceries and made our meals ourselves.
The resort itself is located along a bend in the North Fork South Branch of the Potomac River and our cabin faced the river and a rock face that rises 300' above the river. The setting was everything we hoped it would be - quiet and full of nature including dark skies (for stargazing), deer, squirrels and bald eagles that we spotted flying around from time to time.
All of the cabins are located along a single road that runs between the river and the cabins. Between the road and the river are a riverside deck with swings and outdoor seating and a pavilion for private events. Additionally, further down the road, there are a total of six hiking trails, including the Top of the Rock trail, that leads to the top of the rock face that overlooks the river (and our cabin). You can see the view from the top of the rocks in the image above or, watch the full hike in the video below (or, on our Youtube channel).
The cabin, we chose "Cabin 5 - Wild Turkey", was a well appointed, one-bedroom cabin. It was pretty much what you'd expect from a modern "luxury" cabin. It had a king bed, gas fireplace, bathroom with two-person shower, jucuzzi tub, digital satellite television, kitchen with modern appliances and countertops and an outdoor charcoal grill. It also included all linens, towels and washcloths (great addition!). The front porch included outdoor seating and the hot tub. The hot tub being on the front porch made it feel a bit like you were on display but with so few cabins in the resort, the foot (and car) traffic was minimal so it wasn't a big deal.
If you're looking for a place to "get away from it all" I'd highly recommend Harman's Luxury Log Cabins. There are ample outdoor adventures in the surrounding area and if you like to fish, private stream access is provided to guests staying on the property for a nominal fee. We had plenty of time to rest, recharge and prepare for the second half of our week which we spent with our kids at ACE Adventure Resort! I could see this being a place that we return to in the future.
