ACE Adventure Resort

Located on 1500 wooded acres adjacent to the New River Gorge National Park, ACE Adventure Resort offers white water rafting trips on the New and Gauley rivers. In addition to rafting, ACE features the only zip line tours with views of the Gorge. They also host rock climbing, mountain biking, lake adventures and a waterpark on the lake. They offer a range of cabin rentals and camping options plus dining facilities on property.

Due to the large variety of activities offered, cost can range from $23 for a single, half-day entry to the water park to a full, multi-day experience costing hundreds of dollars per person.

Initially, we were drawn to ACE resort by the water park on the lake. The more we explored the variety of activities that they had to offer, the more we knew we wanted to spend the weekend at ACE for our annual mid-summer, family trip.

ACE breaks its adventures into a few categories, and most visitors mix and match rather than sticking to one. Here's the rundown.

Whitewater Rafting

This is what put ACE on the map. The Lower New River trip (full or half day, ages 10+) is the classic ACE run - bigger rapids, more adrenaline. The Upper New River is the gentler cousin, open to kids as young as 6, which makes it the better call if you're rafting with the whole family. Come fall, ACE also runs trips on the Gauley River - some of the most respected whitewater on the East Coast, and not for first-timers.

Aerial Adventures

If you'd rather stay dry, ACE's aerial lineup includes a zip line tour with views straight into the New River Gorge, a full aerial adventure park, guided rock climbing and rappelling, and a bridge walk. Good for burning a few hours between river trips, or for the person in your group who's decided rafting looks "too wet."

Land Adventures & Trails

Back on solid ground, ACE has a mud obstacle course, ATV tours, and mountain biking, plus more than 30 miles of hiking and biking trails across the resort's 1,500 acres. Easy to fill a whole day here without ever touching the water.

Wonderland Waterpark

The 5-acre, spring-fed Wonderland waterpark is the lower-key option - multiple water slides, open by day pass or season pass, and the reason a lot of families end up at ACE in the first place. It's also home to the resort's most infamous feature.

The Blob

Every waterpark has slides and a lazy river. Only one has a giant inflatable that launches human beings into the sky. Meet the Blob - a padded, banana-yellow airbag anchored just off the lake tower that turns anybody willing to sit on it into a projectile.

Here's how it works: one person climbs the tower and cannonballs onto one end. Whoever's waiting on the other end gets launched - sometimes ten or fifteen feet - before crashing back down into Summersville Lake. It's equal parts hilarious and mildly terrifying to watch, and even more so to be the one flying.

Fair warning: once you watch someone else get launched, you'll want a turn. Bring a change of clothes - you're getting wet either way.

Lodging ranges from deluxe cabins (studio up to 3+ bedroom, several with full kitchens, private decks, and hot tubs) to more rustic options like cabin tents and bunkhouses, plus RV and tent camping. Three dining spots — The Lost Paddle Bar & Grill, Tree Tops Cafe, and Woody's Grill — are all lakeside on the property, so most guests don't need to leave the resort for meals.

How child-friendly is the ACE Adventure Resort waterpark?
