Cacapon State Park

Positioned in the shadow of a folded mountain ridge in West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle Cacapon Resort State Park is a 6,000-acre, year-round destination. The park is frequented by both nature lovers and adventure seekers from around the state, as well as nearby cities such as Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Cacapon Resort is also a draw for history buffs due to its proximity to the historic town of Berkeley Springs and Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. Extend your stay by booking a room at the park’s recently renovated lodge — the newest in the state park system — in a cabin or the restored Old Inn.

In the past we've taken the kids fishing there, shot sporting clays at the shooting center, swam in the lake, played golf and dined there. See the photos below from some of our visits.

Trails and Activities

Cacapon has more than 20 miles of trails, including Laurel Trail — see our full trail guide here — winding through the resort's wooded ridge. Beyond hiking, the park's Robert Trent Jones Sr.-designed golf course is one of the more notable state park courses in the region, and the lake offers swimming and fishing in warmer months. Mountain bikers use the same trail network as hikers.

The park's recently renovated lodge overlooks the golf course, and Cacapon also offers several tiers of cabins along with the restored Old Inn for a more historic stay. A full-service spa rounds out the resort side of the park.

Not currently — lodging is limited to the lodge, cabins, and the Old Inn. Camping is available at nearby parks such as Blackwater Falls or Lost River.
